We turned out more than 150 WV Youths to Appalachia Powershift'09, now we're taking that power to our communities. November 2nd will be a day of unprecedented coordinated action across WV high schools and colleges. We are organizing the largest youth-run call-in day in the history of the WV climate movement. Coal River Mountain, the best example of our potential to build green jobs in the coalfields, is under attack and it's up to us to join coalfield residents to demand its preservation.

Early reports that Massey Energy has started blasting on Coal River Mountain as part of a giant Mountaintop Removal site have been confirmed. The year long campaign that we have engaged in to build green jobs through a wind farm on the ridge of Coal River Mountain has come to a salient mark. It is now or never for Coal River Mountain.

It is not just the green jobs and mountain that are under attack here, it is the safety of the people living below the Brushy Fork Slurry Impoundment. This Impoundment is 8.2 billion gallons of toxic goo that sits over communities in the Coal River Valley and Massey is blasting Dangerously close to the Impoundment.

Be a Part of the WV Youth Action League's Day of Action!

Join us on Monday, November 2nd throughout the day as we generate hundreds of calls from West Virginia students and youths into the Obama Administration. We are imploring the Administration to use their influence with Governor Manchin to stop the blasting and save Coal River Mountain. We are acting through every method we can to generate phone calls into the Obama Administration. Here are effective ways to generate calls and play an important role in this effort:

a) Set up a table with candy/food/drinks, background information about the call-in day, and information about your organization. If you can take time beforehand to make a banner from cloth or invite a musician friend over, you'll generate even more interest

b) Print off and Hand Out Quarter Sheet flyers in your high school / campus / community with information on the call-in day. Distribute these in your classes and to your friends.

c) Invite Your Friends to the Facebook Event ASAP. If the event does not pop up immediately, simply search for the event "WV Day of Action to Build Green Jobs & Save Coal River Mountain" or the group "WV-YAL" and you should find it.

d) Climate Ground Zero, based in the Coal River Valley of WV has been coordinating an effective direct action campaign where people have been practicing non-violent civil disobedience to stop Mountaintop Removal. Get in touch with them through their website or by calling 304-854-1937 if you can leave your campus / community to take part in direct actions to save Coal River Mountain.
