Hiring: Michigan Organizer
The Michigan organizer will be working in collaboration with partners in Michigan, including the Michigna Student Sustainability Coalition, as well as reaching out to areas without a strong network. They will also be working with solidarity and anti oppression groups throughout the state who are fighting the battle against dirty energy and working toward a clean and sustainable economy. Areas of focus include working to stop tar sands and coal expansion, and working to promote renewable energy and green jobs.
The Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC) has been connecting youth to environmental justice issues for over 20 years. We are seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our organization as a youth, student and community organizer on environmental justice and climate change issues. This position is full time and covers Michigan. Preferably, this position would be located in Lansing through the Michigan PowerShift event in early October.
Focus:
The top priority for this position is to continue building a vibrant youth environmental justice movement in Michigan, which means bringing new youth and new youth groups into the Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC), working with the Energy Action Coalition's campaigns, and supporting existing organizations that are engaged in similar and valuable work, and connecting these youth groups to regional environmental justice issues (such as the Detroit incinerator, stopping local coal plants and campaigning for Wind energy as an alternative).
Qualifications:
SEAC is looking for someone who has demonstrated commitment to working for justice and anti-oppression, as well as a self motivated person with strong initiative. Experience working with youth is a must. Must have ability to travel. SEAC’s staff collectively manages themselves, so the organizer must be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Responsibilities:
Connecting Students Groups to Regional Environmental Justice Issues -- The Michigan Organizer will work to connect students with key community groups working on environmental justice issues in Michigan. This may include collaborating on regional actions, youth oriented projects such as Michigan PowerShift, other regional/statewide summits and events, days of action, as well as recruiting interns.
Qualitatively mentor and organize with youth in Michigan – The Michigan Organizer will work to work with existing student and youth leaders on campuses across Michigan, will work to develop new leaders, recruit youth into SEAC’s leadership, and work with interns.
Support Regional Network Building and Regional Environmental Justice Gatherings These events are organized largely by youth volunteer work and in coordination with other regional student groups and are intended, in part, to help build communication and cooperation among Michigan schools working on similar issues.
Administrative and Support work for Student Environmental Action Coalition This work includes supporting SEAC interns within the Michigan region, fundraising, tracking and reporting deliverables, communicating with and supporting the SEAC National Council and SEAC Staff and working with the Energy Action Coalition.
70% Organizing with youth on environmental justice issues
20% Fundraising – including grassroots fundraising and grant writing
10% Administrative and support work for the Student Environmental Action Coalition
Details of the position:
This will be a full time position. Compensation will be between $18,500 and 24,000 a year. It is expected that two days a week and some holidays will be non-work personal days. It is expected that the organizer take at least three weeks and no more than 6 weeks of days off per year. SEAC is building the long term power of the environmental justice movement and will be unable to do this if they burnout, go really insane, or sell their soul to corporate amerika, which is the same thing as going insane. This position will begin ASAP in September 2009.
